NetCDF Analysis Tool

NetCDF (network Common Data Form) is a file format for storing multi-dimensional scientific data (variables) such as temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed, and directionNetCDF was created by Unidata, an organization funded primarily by the National Science Foundation. This tool was designed to interact with NetCDF libraries to facilitate the extraction and visualization of NetCDF multi-dimensional data in the ArcGIS environment.

After opening a NetCDF file we can see the metadata contained in the file on the tree view to the left.  This data represents a ship track through the Pacific Ocean where current velocity and sea temperature were collected at multiple depths over time. Each plotted point represents a selected depth at specified time intervals and position.
The plotted track can be seen here.  The shape file attribute table contains the values for the selected plot variable "v" and the selected time steps from the dimension variable "time".

In the example below we have opened a NetCDF file contianing gridded data that represents global soil moisture content with several hundred monthly time steps. We have built the grid surface and can now animate how soil moisture changes through time.
